Yes fakes is an occasional problem. Russian "Leicas" or lenses with different name rings substituted for the original. But how do you assess a small number of cameras not in the factory records, but built from original parts (obtained when the factory went broke and not built there) ?
The parts were from a quite rare handmade Swiss camera, but some may have been modified (half frame\pin registration\no light meter\ non standard colours) so as to resemble even rarer varieties (some exist from the factory in less than 100 copies, others in only 6). They will of course command a high price, but strictly speaking, they are fakes, and can be identified as such from trustworthy transcriptions of the factory records.
It may only have diluted the pool of extremely rare speciments by 10% or 1%, and since the numbers are small, the fakes may be even rarer than the ones produced when the factory was in operation.
So how do you regard this?
