As I understand the path of light inside, it has plenty of opportunities to fill the entire volume. The constructors remedy is to fit light shields that keep incoming light from joining reflected light. Look at the innards of Leitz\Minolta, Zeiss and Nikon. Since the incoming light to the secondary mirror up front has to cross the path of the image forming light, some compromises have to be made.
Nikon also boasts of having made a hole in the rear mirror (which some of their competitors others also seems to have had for quite some time), so less light wandering around inside the glass.
My conclusion is that stray light destroys contrast (and colour), but that there are ways to minimize this. I am only an optics user and vaguely remember university optics, but maybe an optics designer can explain more.
