Ha, with Rolf's tip it works for me now. With glasses (short-sighted around 6 diopters) it's not so easy. HP S340c monitor and about 1.5m distance. Finger quite close to my nose and then I manage it. But it's quite unstable. Up until now I've always tried it with small images and without glasses.

It takes some people weeks of practice before it becomes effortless. I was shooting crosseye pairs for many weeks before I could see them myself so I had to ask others if they worked.
